Bishop John Kiplimo Lelei Named First Bishop of Newly Erected Catholic Diocese of Kapsabet
In a landmark moment for the Catholic Church in Kenya, His Holiness Pope Francis has appointed Auxiliary Bishop John Kiplimo Lelei as the first Bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Kapsabet, a development that marks a new chapter of growth and pastoral care for the faithful in the region.
The Vatican announcement, made earlier today, was met with joy, celebration, and prayerful thanksgiving across the local parishes and Christian communities in Nandi County and beyond. Bishop Lelei’s appointment is not only historic but deeply meaningful to the faithful, who have long awaited a more localized spiritual leadership.
A Shepherd with a Heart of Service
Bishop Lelei, who has faithfully served as Auxiliary Bishop in the Diocese of Eldoret since 2015, is widely known for his humility, deep spiritual wisdom, and tireless dedication to pastoral ministry. With roots deeply embedded in the community, he has become a beloved figure across the Rift Valley region, where his mission-driven approach and emphasis on youth and family ministry have left an indelible mark.
“This is a moment of great spiritual significance for our community,” said Fr. Peter Kiprotich of St. Joseph's Parish in Kapsabet. “Bishop Lelei has always been a man of the people. His leadership will undoubtedly guide the Diocese of Kapsabet into a future of unity, evangelization, and growth.”
A Diocese Born of Growth and Hope
The erection of the Diocese of Kapsabet is part of the Church’s broader mission to respond to the pastoral needs of growing Catholic populations in Kenya. Carved from the Diocese of Eldoret, the new diocese will provide closer spiritual support and localized governance, helping to better serve the needs of the faithful.
With Kapsabet as its episcopal see, the diocese encompasses a region rich in cultural diversity, strong family values, and an active lay faithful. The newly designated Cathedral of St. Paul in Kapsabet Town will serve as the mother church of the diocese.
Looking Ahead
In his first public statement following the announcement, Bishop Lelei expressed deep gratitude to God, the Holy Father, and the people he has served throughout his ministry.
“I accept this mission with humility and trust in God’s providence,” he said. “Together with the clergy, religious, and lay faithful, we shall journey forward in faith, hope, and love.”
Preparations are already underway for the official installation ceremony, expected to draw thousands of faithful, local leaders, and clergy from across Kenya. The date of the installation Mass will be announced in the coming weeks.
As Bishop Lelei prepares to take on this sacred role, the Diocese of Kapsabet stands at the threshold of a new and hope-filled era, rooted in the Gospel and driven by a vision of unity and service.
