Isiolo Governor Abdi Guyo Impeached by County Assembly Over Abuse of Office, Mismanagement
In a dramatic turn of events, the Isiolo County Assembly has overwhelmingly voted to impeach Governor Abdi Guyo, citing gross misconduct, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county affairs.
During a special sitting held on Thursday morning, 16 out of 18 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) supported the motion to remove the embattled governor from office—far surpassing the constitutional threshold required for impeachment.
The motion, tabled earlier this week, accused Governor Guyo of a series of violations including irregular procurement practices, misappropriation of public funds, nepotism in appointments, and failure to implement key development projects. The MCAs claimed the governor had presided over an administration marked by opacity, stalled service delivery, and financial mismanagement.
Majority Leader Mohamed Kuti, who led the charge, said the impeachment was a necessary step to restore accountability and protect the interests of Isiolo residents.
“This decision was not made lightly. We have listened to the concerns of the people and reviewed substantial evidence of executive overreach and failure in governance. The people of Isiolo deserve transparency, service, and leadership that puts them first,” Kuti said.
The impeachment motion now heads to the Senate, which will conduct a trial to either uphold or overturn the County Assembly’s decision. Governor Guyo remains suspended pending the Senate’s determination.
Governor Guyo has denied the allegations, calling the impeachment politically motivated and a “blatant abuse of legislative power.” His legal team is expected to contest the proceedings both in the Senate and potentially in court.
If the Senate upholds the impeachment, Isiolo will become one of the few counties in Kenya to have successfully removed a sitting governor, marking a significant precedent in the devolution era.
