Garissa Governor Nathif Jama Adam has officially launched the Baraki-Maalimin/Afweine Water Supply System, a landmark project set to transform access to clean and reliable water for thousands of residents in the region.
Addressing residents, development partners and national leaders present at the ceremony, Governor Jama hailed the project as a lifeline for the communities it serves, noting that access to safe water is critical for health, education and overall socio-economic development.
“This water supply system is more than just infrastructure; it is about restoring dignity and supporting livelihoods. It represents the resilience of our people and the power of collaborative development,” said Governor Jama.
The project features three boreholes, a 48-kilometer pipeline, two booster stations, 225,000-liter masonry storage tanks and several public water points. Once fully operational, it will directly benefit 2,000 households, two primary schools and two dispensaries, significantly improving quality of life in the region.
Governor Jama expressed deep appreciation to residents for their patience and cooperation throughout the development process and commended national and county leaders for their support. Those present included Principal Secretary for ASAL and Regional Development Harsama Kello, Principal Secretary for Maritime Affairs Eng. Adan Abdi Millah, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi, Garissa Senator Abdul Haji, Lagdera MP Abdikadir Mohamed Hussein and Garissa Township MP Major Dekow Barrow, among others.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to expanding water infrastructure across Garissa County, stating that equitable access to clean water remains a top priority. “We will continue to invest in sustainable water solutions because water is the foundation of health, productivity and social stability,” he said.
Governor Jama further called upon development partners and stakeholders to continue supporting similar initiatives, adding that the success of such programs demonstrates the transformative impact of partnerships between communities, government and technical agencies.
