The Wiper Democratic Movement has strongly condemned a violent assault on Kitui Member of County Assembly (MCA) Jacinta Mwoni, calling it a targeted act of gender-based political violence. The attack, allegedly carried out by individuals linked to Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai, occurred shortly after Mwoni publicly endorsed Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka during a funeral service.
In a sharply worded statement issued Wednesday, Wiper Secretary General Shakila Abdalla described the incident as “a disgusting display of brute misogyny and political thuggery.”
“This wasn’t random. It was targeted and deeply political,” Abdalla said, insisting the assault was an attempt to silence Mwoni for exercising her constitutional right to freedom of political expression.
The Wiper Party characterized the attack as part of a broader pattern of violence aimed at women in leadership positions. “It’s a warning: speak out, and we will hurt you. This is gender-based violence in politics,” the statement said, condemning the use of intimidation to suppress female voices. Abdalla referred to the attackers as “cowards who fear women with opinions.”
The party cited the Kenyan Constitution in defense of Mwoni’s actions, emphasizing that Article 33 guarantees freedom of expression, while Article 38 protects every citizen’s right to make political choices. “Mwoni broke no law. She exercised her rights. Her attackers broke the law,” the statement read.
Wiper leaders demanded accountability from MP Mbai, accusing him of orchestrating or endorsing the attack. “He did not condemn the assault. His message was clear: silence this woman by force. This is not leadership; it is thuggery,” said Abdalla, calling on political leaders and law enforcement to “name and shame” those responsible.
The party further urged immediate action by the relevant authorities to investigate the incident, bring the perpetrators to justice, and establish stronger protections for women participating in political life.
“This is not just about Jacinta Mwoni,” Abdalla said. “It is about every woman who dares to speak, lead, and challenge power.”
