Lost and Found Across Borders: Engineer Reunited with Stolen iPhone After Months-Long Journey

A remarkable story of loss, persistence, and cross-border cooperation has emerged after a Kenyan man was reunited with his stolen phone months after it disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

The incident dates back to 7th November 2025, on the eve of preparations for Mwalimu Kendagor’s 17th Anniversary celebrations. Amid the busy activities, the victim lost his iPhone 14 Pro Max—an घटना that initially seemed like a common case of theft.

However, what followed was anything but ordinary.

Using Apple’s “Find My” tracking feature, the phone appeared to move across multiple locations, first within Kisumu, then across the Malaba border, and eventually into Kampala, Uganda. The unusual trail painted a picture of a device traveling hundreds of kilometers, likely in the hands of an organized network.

Despite the digital breadcrumbs, weeks turned into months with no recovery, and hope gradually faded. The owner eventually moved on, even upgrading to a newer device, resigning to the belief that the phone was gone for good.

But in a surprising turn of events, the story did not end there.

On 7th April 2026, nearly five months after the loss, the phone was successfully recovered and returned to Kenya. This breakthrough was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the Ugandan police, whose diligence and investigative work led to tracing the device.

The recovery was further facilitated by the goodwill and support of Queen Mercy Barteka, who played a key role in ensuring the phone’s safe return without complications.

Speaking after the recovery, the owner expressed deep gratitude to the Ugandan authorities, praising their professionalism and efficiency.

“This experience has restored my faith that sometimes, what seems permanently lost can still find its way back,” he said. “The dedication shown by the Ugandan police is truly commendable.”

He also expressed hope that Kenyan law enforcement agencies would continue to strengthen their capacity and commitment to handling such cases with similar effectiveness.

The incident highlights not only the growing role of technology in tracking stolen property but also the importance of regional cooperation in combating cross-border crime.

In a world where stolen items rarely resurface, this case stands out as a powerful reminder: persistence, technology, and collaboration can sometimes turn the improbable into reality.
