The County Government of Uasin Gishu has reaffirmed its commitment to agricultural transformation, with a renewed focus on coffee farming as a key driver of economic empowerment for local farmers.
On Friday, Deputy Governor H.E. Hon. Evans Kipkemei Kapkea presided over a critical planning and review session aimed at evaluating the county’s coffee seedling distribution program and outlining strategic steps for its next phase.
“This review allows us to ensure that what we started is taking root—not just in the fields, but in our households,” said DG Kapkea. “The next phase will build on these lessons to reach more farmers and enhance productivity. Coffee farming is no longer a distant ideal—it’s becoming a tangible opportunity for income and growth.”
The session brought together a wide range of key stakeholders including Chief Officer for Agriculture Mr. Elphas Kesio, sub-county and ward agricultural officers, as well as representatives from the county administration. The discussion centered on farmer feedback, coordination logistics, and how to streamline future distributions for maximum impact.
Mr. Kesio emphasized the importance of continuous training and technical support for farmers, revealing that the county had successfully rolled out targeted training sessions to equip beneficiaries with the knowledge needed to thrive in the coffee value chain.
He also clarified that, due to logistical planning and to ensure equitable access, seedling collection will commence a day after the official launch, allowing for orderly distribution at designated points.
The coffee initiative is a key component of the county’s Nguzo Number One on Agriculture and Food Security, which promotes crop diversification, value addition, and increased farmer earnings.
Also in attendance were Director of Agriculture Kenneth Kili, Director of Communication Emmanuel Kipchumba, Director of Governor’s Press Silah Kosgei, and Governor’s Delivery Unit Director Charles Kapkiai. All reiterated their departments’ readiness to support the smooth rollout of the program’s next phase.
