Detectives from Kamukunji have arrested a 38-year-old woman, Harriet Mary Wabwire, at her hideout in Tassia, Nairobi, for orchestrating an elaborate fraud that swindled a Chinese national out of USD 101,000.
Wabwire, posing as the Director of OTD Group Limited, lured the foreign investor with claims that she could supply aluminium alloys for export. As part of her scheme, she furnished the victim with a forged bill of lading and a counterfeit Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) certificate of conformity, purporting that a consignment of 23,890 kilograms of aluminium alloys was securely loaded into a 40-foot container and ready for shipment from Mombasa to Ningbo, China.
Believing the deal was legitimate, the complainant transferred USD 101,000 into Wabwire’s bank account. Shortly after receiving the funds, she went incommunicado, switching off her phone and disappearing from known locations.
Following a thorough investigation and forensic analysis, detectives tracked her movements and managed to trace her to an apartment in Tassia estate, where she was arrested without incident.
Police have confirmed that Wabwire is currently in custody, undergoing interrogation and processing ahead of her arraignment.
Authorities have warned the public and international investors to exercise caution when engaging in cross-border transactions and to verify credentials through official channels. Investigations into whether Wabwire had accomplices or previous offenses are ongoing.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) commended the swift action taken by officers and reiterated its commitment to combating economic crimes and protecting investors from fraudsters..
