Rt. Rev. Thegu Mutahi Condemns Police Brutality, Urges Youth to Maintain Peace Amid Protests

PCEA Moderator Rt. Rev. Thegu Mutahi has strongly condemned recent incidents of police brutality, terming them "uncalled for" and "senseless." He cited the killing of teacher and blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody and the near-fatal shooting of street vendor Boniface Karanja as deeply regrettable acts that demand immediate action.

Speaking on Sunday during the dedication service of PCEA Karuri Imani Church in Banana, Rev. Mutahi called on security agencies to exercise restraint, particularly during planned demonstrations. He emphasized that peaceful protests are a constitutional right and must not be met with violence.

“The continued brutality meted out on innocent and peaceful Kenyans by police is unacceptable. It is time this behavior is brought to an end,” he stated.

Rev. Mutahi further urged young people planning to take part in Wednesday’s protests—marking the first anniversary of the historic Gen-Z demonstrations held on June 25 last year—to remain peaceful and avoid being manipulated by political players.

"Shun the politicians who want to use you for their own selfish gain. In politics, there are no permanent enemies or friends, only interests. Don’t be pawns in their games," he cautioned.

The PCEA head also took the opportunity to decry what he called the country’s toxic obsession with politics. He lamented the persistent post-election political bickering, warning that it undermines national development.

“We must move beyond the endless electioneering. Let us instead focus on meaningful work—farming, side hustles, and other productive ventures—to take care of our families,” he said.

The vibrant dedication service marked the formal blessing of the 10-year-old PCEA Karuri Imani Church, which drew congregants from the seven churches under the Banana Parish. The event was led by Parish Minister Rev. Mary Muriuki, who also serves as the Moderator of the Kiambu Presbytery.
