President Ruto Oversees Destruction of Over 6,000 Illicit Firearms in National Crackdown on Crime

President William Ruto on Friday presided over the destruction of more than 6,000 illegal firearms at the National Police Leadership Academy in Ngong’, a significant step in Kenya's fight against insecurity and gun violence.

The weapons, recovered between 2022 and 2025 through intensified security operations and voluntary disarmament programs, were destroyed in a high-profile event attended by top government officials, members of the National Police Service, and representatives from international partners and civil society.

Speaking at the event, President Ruto reiterated his administration's unwavering commitment to restoring peace and order in all parts of the country.

“The destruction of these firearms signals our total focus in tackling insecurity and violence in our communities. Every illegal weapon taken off the streets is a step closer to safer neighborhoods and a more secure Kenya,” said the President.

He emphasized that while the government is determined to eliminate criminal gangs and illicit arms trafficking, it is equally committed to addressing impunity within the police ranks.

“We must also protect Kenyans from rogue police officers. Criminal elements in uniform must be held to account. The badge must never be a shield for lawlessness,” President Ruto stated firmly.

The President called on citizens to support the government’s ongoing reforms in the security sector and encouraged continued cooperation with law enforcement agencies to root out crime.

The event comes amid a broader national security reform agenda aimed at professionalizing the police service, enhancing community policing, and ensuring accountability at all levels of law enforcement.
