The Open University of Kenya (OUK) and Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVTTI) have entered into a landmark partnership aimed at expanding access to higher education and practical skills development, particularly in agriculture and veterinary sciences.
The collaboration was sealed through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during RVTTI’s 13th International Conference held in Eldoret. Themed “Shaping a Sustainable Future for Employability,” the event brought together more than 100 participants from Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, Nigeria, and Iran to share insights on vocational training innovations and workforce development.
Speaking on behalf of OUK Vice Chancellor Prof. Elijah Omwenga, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. Caroline Omulando emphasized the significance of the partnership in addressing local agricultural and veterinary training needs.
“This agreement with the VET Regional Office will enable us to deliver veterinary-related programs tailored for this agriculturally rich region,” Prof. Omulando said. “It grants our students access to essential veterinary laboratories, helping them develop practical skills necessary for the job market.”
Prof. Omulando also highlighted OUK’s strength in delivering flexible, large-scale education through its digital platforms. “With our expansive online learning environment, this collaboration allows RVTTI students to gain practical experience while accessing OUK’s virtual courses. The initiative supports both school-leavers and working professionals pursuing further education.”
RVTTI Principal Ms. Loice Kuto welcomed the MoU, describing it as a timely opportunity to align training with labor market needs. “This partnership will enable joint efforts in curriculum design and rollout, helping us reach a wider audience with training that aligns with industry requirements,” she said.
Chair of RVTTI’s Board of Governors, Prof. David Some, underlined the global relevance of open universities in democratizing access to education. “Open universities are among the largest in the world because of their online delivery model. We are honored to be OUK’s regional anchor in Eldoret,” he said.
Mr. Bernard Isalambo, Director of the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) Delivery Unit at the State Department, lauded the agreement and the broader conference goals, noting their alignment with national efforts to upskill youth.
“Modular curricula will allow young people to earn certifications every three months, giving them the option to either enter the workforce or continue studying,” he said. “This event is very timely in advancing our goal to equip the youth with competitive skills.”
The MoU is set to take effect in the upcoming financial year. A joint implementation committee will oversee the rollout and coordination of all agreed initiatives.
“Although the new financial year is just weeks away, we’ve already laid the groundwork and are confident in our ability to launch the partnership smoothly,” Prof. Omulando concluded.
The OUK-RVTTI partnership marks a significant step toward bridging the skills gap and creating more inclusive learning opportunities for Kenyan youth and professionals.
