Nairobi, Kenya – The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) on Saturday arrested one person in a shisha crackdown at an entertainment joint in Hurlingham, Nairobi, as the government intensifies efforts to curb the illegal sale and use of nicotine products.
The arrest comes just days after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced the suspension of all existing nicotine product licenses, calling for a fresh 21-day vetting process to enforce compliance with public health regulations.
According to NACADA Head of Entertainment Nicholas Kosgey, the raid was conducted at Ledet Bar and Restaurant along Argwings Kodhek Road, where several shisha products were seized.
> “We want to ensure that our people and future generations do not continue consuming nicotine products,” said Kosgey, who vowed that nationwide crackdowns would continue.
He confirmed that the suspect is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court on Tuesday.
CS Duale, while announcing the suspension of nicotine licenses earlier in the week, emphasized the need for accountability among vendors.
> “All persons currently licensed will now be required to reapply afresh within 21 days, ensuring full compliance with all vetting laws,” the Health CS stated.
The crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to enforce the 2017 government ban on shisha, which was imposed over serious health concerns and increasing abuse, particularly among youth.
