A chilling new development has emerged in the ongoing investigation into the death of influencer and teacher Albert Ojwang, with CCTV footage now offering a clearer picture of his final moments while in police custody. The footage, aired during a special segment on Citizen TV, has sparked fresh outrage across the country and intensified calls for justice.
The video, timestamped 1:59 a.m. on June 8, 2025, shows at least four police officers pushing a stretcher carrying what appears to be a body wrapped in a white hospital sheet. Mere minutes later—at 2:11 a.m.—the same officers are seen wheeling out a man believed to be Ojwang, still visibly alive though in a weakened state. The footage was reportedly captured from surveillance cameras at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where Ojwang had been held before his death.
This apparent timeline contradicts earlier police claims and aligns with a statement from medics at Mbagathi Hospital, who confirmed that Ojwang was brought in unresponsive at around 2:00 a.m. The medics’ report had initially raised concerns, as it clashed with the police narrative suggesting Ojwang may have harmed himself while in custody.
Suspect Arrested for Tampering With Evidence
Authorities have since arrested an individual suspected of tampering with the CCTV evidence at Central Police Station in a possible attempt to conceal the events leading up to Ojwang’s death. The suspect, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed, is said to be a civilian IT technician contracted by the station for digital surveillance management.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a parallel investigation, and human rights groups are now calling for immediate suspension and prosecution of the officers implicated in the footage.
Public and Political Reactions Escalate
The release of the footage has reignited public protests and drawn harsh criticism from political leaders. Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who previously termed the ODM-Ruto cooperation agreement “meaningless” over state-sponsored human rights abuses, reiterated his position in the wake of the footage.
“This is no longer just a case of misconduct—it is a clear abuse of power. A young man was taken from his home, and now we see evidence of how he may have been killed,” said Sifuna.
Social media platforms have since been flooded with the hashtag #JusticeForOjwang, as Kenyans express grief, anger, and disbelief over the unfolding events.
Mounting Pressure on Government
The new evidence further strains the government’s position, which has yet to issue an official statement in response to the footage. Advocacy organizations, including Amnesty International Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission, are demanding an independent inquiry and swift legal action against those responsible.
“This is not just about Ojwang. It’s about the integrity of our justice system and the safety of every Kenyan in state custody,” said a statement from the Albinism Society of Kenya, which had earlier joined other groups in condemning police brutality.
