KUPPET Threatens Nationwide Strike on June 28 Over Delayed CBA Talks

By Vivian Anyango

The Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has issued a firm ultimatum to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), demanding the immediate commencement of negotiations for a new Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). The union has given the commission a seven-day deadline, warning that failure to begin talks will trigger a nationwide teachers' strike starting June 28.

KUPPET officials expressed frustration over the stagnation of discussions, describing it as unacceptable amid rising living costs and what they termed the continued exploitation of teachers. The union maintains that educators have been patient for far too long, waiting for fair pay and improved working conditions, and accused the TSC of showing little commitment to resolving their concerns.

KUPPET Secretary-General Akello Misori emphasized that the planned industrial action is not a bluff, warning that if the commission fails to act swiftly, the strike will paralyze learning in all secondary schools across the country. Misori stated that the union is fully prepared to protect the welfare and dignity of its members through lawful industrial means.

This development comes at a time when Kenya’s education sector is already under significant strain due to a national teacher shortage, student unrest, and infrastructure delays. The looming strike threatens to further disrupt the school calendar, particularly with critical exams on the horizon.

KUPPET has called on the Ministry of Education and other government stakeholders to urgently intervene and facilitate dialogue between the union and the TSC. According to the union, the new CBA is not just necessary—it is long overdue—and should be treated as a national priority.

“We are fighting not just for a salary increment, but for the dignity and recognition of the teaching profession,” said Misori.
