KeNHA Cracks Down on Busia County Over Illegal Road Sign and Fake Fines

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has launched a crackdown on the Busia County Government following the discovery of an unauthorized road sign demanding motorists pay an illegitimate fine of Ksh20,000. The sign, which had been erected along a busy highway in the region, falsely cited traffic violations and misled drivers into paying non-existent penalties.

KeNHA officials confirmed that the sign was neither approved nor compliant with national highway regulations. The authority acted swiftly to dismantle the signage, issuing a stern warning to other county governments against engaging in similar unlawful activities.

“This is not only a breach of the law but also a deliberate attempt to extort money from unsuspecting motorists,” a KeNHA spokesperson stated.

Motorists welcomed the agency’s intervention, expressing relief and calling for deeper investigations into the incident. Many questioned how long the scheme had been in operation and how much money may have been fraudulently collected under the pretense of enforcement.

The development has also sparked public outcry over accountability, with residents and civil rights groups demanding clarity on the involvement of county officials. There is growing concern that such actions undermine public trust and set a dangerous precedent.

As of now, Busia County has not issued an official response to the incident. However, pressure is mounting for county leaders to explain the origin of the fake sign and whether any county officers were directly implicated in what appears to be a coordinated extortion attempt.
