KNUNM Confirms Nationwide Strike is Still On

By Ernest Bandi

The Kenya National Union of Nurses and Midwives (KNUNM) has reaffirmed that its planned nationwide strike, scheduled to begin on July 7, 2025, will proceed as planned.

According to the Union, nurses across the country continue to endure poor working conditions, employment disparities, and insecurity within the public health system—issues that remain unresolved despite prior engagements with both County and National Governments.

KNUNM Secretary General Seth Panyako has mobilized members of the Union’s National Advisory Council for a meeting next Friday, to deliberate on the strike notice issued earlier this month. The Union emphasized that the government has failed to address nine critical grievances outlined in the 26-day strike notice.

In a formal letter, the Union has requested that all nursing officers in charge allow healthcare workers three days off duty from June 26 to June 28, to facilitate attendance at the special meeting.

“We have invited the National Advisory Council to the meeting to ratify the nationwide strike notice, which is set to commence on July 7, 2025. Union members are hereby urged to continue mobilizing to ensure 100 percent participation in the strike,” said the statement signed by the Union’s leadership.
