The future of Kenyan athletics shone brightly this past weekend at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru, as hundreds of promising young athletes competed in the National U18 and U20 trials, a key step in selecting the team that will represent Kenya at the 2025 Africa U18/U20 Athletics Championships in Nigeria.
The two-day trials, organized by Athletics Kenya (AK), brought together youth from across the country—many of whom emerged from regional development camps, school athletics programs, and grassroots initiatives. The event served not only to select a formidable national team, but also to showcase the depth and diversity of Kenya’s budding athletic talent.
“I am deeply inspired by the incredible show of talent we witnessed at Afraha Stadium,” said Barnaba Korir, Athletics Kenya’s Youth Development Director. “The level of competition, discipline and determination displayed by our youth from all corners of the country affirms that Kenya’s future in athletics is in safe hands.”
The final squad was carefully selected based on performance, potential, and adherence to AK’s values of discipline, integrity, and clean sport. These young athletes will now begin preparations for the continental championships, set to take place later this year in Nigeria.
Mr. Korir further emphasized AK’s commitment to transparency and fairness, citing ongoing efforts in athlete biodata registration, anti-doping education, and strict enforcement against age cheating.
“At Athletics Kenya, we are committed to building a future rooted in discipline, education, integrity, and clean sport,” he said. “We are not only developing athletes—we are nurturing responsible citizens and global ambassadors for Kenya.”
The trials also highlighted the impact of Athletics Kenya’s youth development strategy, which includes nationwide talent identification, regional training camps, and partnerships with schools and counties.
