Gov’t Pathologist Withdraws from Albert Ojwang Autopsy Over Family Ties

Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor has officially withdrawn from conducting the autopsy of Albert Ojwang, the young Kenyan blogger who died under controversial circumstances during recent protests. The decision was made on ethical grounds, as Dr. Oduor disclosed that he is related to the deceased through extended family ties.

The postmortem, which had initially been scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, was delayed to accommodate Dr. Oduor's arrival and a private meeting with Ojwang’s immediate family members. However, shortly after, he recused himself from directly overseeing the procedure to avoid any conflict of interest.

Despite his withdrawal, Dr. Oduor remains part of the medical oversight team involved in the process. A panel of independent pathologists—including one representing the Police Reforms Working Group—was present at the mortuary to proceed with the examination.

Ojwang’s family, represented by lawyer Julius Juma, has expressed difficulty in drawing any conclusions about the exact cause of death ahead of the full postmortem report.

"We need answers. Until we get a comprehensive autopsy, it’s impossible to say with certainty what happened to Albert," Juma stated.

Ojwang, a vocal blogger and activist, was allegedly assaulted during a protest last week. His death has sparked national outrage, particularly after initial police statements denied responsibility and claimed that no live ammunition was used on the day of the demonstrations.

Civil Society Demands Accountability

Activists and civil society groups continue to demand justice and transparency in the investigation. Several lobby groups were present during the autopsy process to monitor proceedings and ensure independence in the examination.

"We want serious action taken against the officers involved," said Hussein Khalid, a prominent human rights defender. "We are following the postmortem closely to uncover the truth behind Albert’s death. We won’t relent until justice is served."

The incident has become a flashpoint in the ongoing debate over police brutality in Kenya, with rights groups and opposition leaders accusing security agencies of using excessive force to silence dissent.

Calls for accountability have included demands for the resignation of key security officials, a full public inquest, and state compensation for Ojwang’s family—including a national burial in honor of his activism.

As the autopsy results are awaited, the pressure continues to mount on the government to provide clear answers and take decisive action.
