Governor Natembeya Demands Independent Probe into Death of Albert Ojwang in Police Custody

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has strongly condemned the tragic and controversial death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station, calling the incident a "chilling reminder" of the persistent human rights challenges within Kenya’s law enforcement system.

In a heartfelt statement issued on Tuesday, Governor Natembeya described Ojwang’s death as both a personal tragedy and a national crisis, demanding an immediate, transparent, and independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“It is with profound sadness and deep concern that I condemn the tragic and untimely death of Albert Ojwang while in custody at the Central Police Station in Nairobi,” said the governor.

“This heartbreaking incident is not only a personal loss to those who knew and loved him, but also a chilling reminder of a troubling pattern that threatens our nation’s commitment to the fundamental rights of every citizen — most notably, the right to life, the right to dignity, and the right to express oneself freely,” he added.

Ojwang’s death, whose details remain unclear, has sparked public outrage and renewed scrutiny of the conduct of security personnel, particularly with regard to the treatment of detainees. Activists and human rights defenders have long raised alarm over deaths in custody, alleging torture, negligence, and systemic abuse.

Governor Natembeya — a former Regional Commissioner and a vocal advocate for justice reform — did not mince words in calling out the responsibilities of the police.

“No Kenyan — no human being — should ever perish under the watch of those entrusted with their safety,” he asserted. “The sanctity of life must remain the cornerstone of our justice system, and it is the solemn duty of our law enforcement agencies to protect, not imperil, those in their care.”

Calling for accountability, Natembeya urged that the investigation into Ojwang’s death be conducted independently and with full transparency, saying: “Justice must not only be done — it must be seen to be done. Anything less would be a disservice to his memory and a betrayal of the values we hold dear.”

His remarks have added to growing pressure on national authorities to address alleged abuses within police ranks and ensure full compliance with the rule of law. Meanwhile, human rights organisations and the family of the deceased are expected to issue formal statements in the coming days.

Governor Natembeya concluded his message by expressing condolences to Ojwang’s family and calling for a renewed national conversation on justice and accountability.

“May his soul rest in eternal peace,” he said.
