From the vibrant streets of Accra, Ghana, to the bustling corridors of a New York hospital, Dr. Eric Teye Otumi’s path to medicine is a testament to perseverance, passion, and purpose.
As a child in Accra, Dr. Otumi was fascinated by the intricacies of the human brain. That early curiosity in neuroscience planted the seeds for a journey that would take him across continents and into the heart of the global medical community.
During his undergraduate studies in biomedical science, Eric’s interests expanded beyond the laboratory. Clinical rotations opened his eyes to the power of human connection in medicine—moments that shifted his focus from pure research to patient care. It was then he decided to become a physician.
His drive and academic excellence earned him a full scholarship to St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies—a diverse, rigorous institution known for training physicians who go on to serve around the globe. At SGU, Eric thrived. He immersed himself in a demanding curriculum supported by an array of study tools—from extensive review courses to simulation exams—designed to prepare students for the pivotal United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE).
“The structure and support at SGU were critical to my development,” he recalls. “They equipped me not just academically, but personally, to meet the challenges of medicine head-on.”
Outside the classroom, Eric engaged deeply with SGU’s multicultural community. He connected with fellow students from all walks of life, learning to appreciate different cultural perspectives on health and healing. Community outreach programs allowed him to put his skills into practice and reinforced his commitment to underserved populations—a commitment rooted in his upbringing.
But the road wasn’t always smooth. Adapting to a new culture while managing the relentless demands of medical school tested his resilience. He leaned on time management strategies, mentorship, and a strong support system to stay focused and motivated.
His determination paid off. Eric successfully matched into the Internal Medicine residency program at the New York Medical College/St. Mary and St. Clare Program—a significant milestone marking the beginning of his clinical career in the U.S.
