Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has defended the government’s investment of millions of shillings in youth, women, and small-scale trader empowerment programs, saying the initiatives are having a real impact on the lives of ordinary Kenyans.
Speaking on Saturday, May 31, during an empowerment event in Kibirichia, Buuri Constituency, Meru County, Kindiki said that the funds are helping individuals such as mama mboga, boda boda operators, salon owners, and carpenters to grow their businesses and support their families.
“Our people don’t need handouts during elections. They need real support now,” the Deputy President said, emphasizing the long-term impact of small grants and business support.
Kindiki noted that even modest amounts such as Sh10,000 can significantly transform someone’s life by enabling them to expand or stabilize their business operations. He underscored the importance of empowering micro and small enterprises, which he said are the backbone of the local economy and a key driver of job creation.
The Deputy President highlighted that the empowerment programs complement broader national initiatives such as the NYOTA program and the Kenya Jobs and Economic Transformation initiative, both of which aim to economically uplift youth and women across the country.
Meru Development Projects Highlighted
In addition to empowerment efforts, Kindiki showcased ongoing development projects in Meru County, including:
- Construction of 17 new markets to support trade and small business operations.
- Allocation of KSh1.9 billion to expand electricity access across the region.
“These projects are about dignity, progress, and creating opportunities in every corner of the country,” he added.
Call for Unity and Peace
Kindiki also issued a strong message urging Kenyans to remain united and to reject political incitement that leads to division or violence.
“We must maintain peace and build our country together,” he said, stressing that development can only thrive in a peaceful and cohesive environment.
According to the Deputy President, in just the last two months, his team has distributed over KSh100 million in empowerment support during countrywide tours, with a strong focus on the Mt. Kenya region.
