In a major breakthrough in the fight against rising insecurity in Utawala, Nairobi County, police have arrested two suspects linked to a series of robberies that have left residents living in fear. The suspects were found in possession of burglary tools and a vehicle believed to have been used in the crimes.
The arrests follow a report filed by a local resident who returned home from work to find his apartment ransacked and valuables stolen. The incident triggered an immediate investigation by the local police.
Following leads, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) tracked down a suspicious Mazda CX-5, which had been spotted in several robbery scenes. Initially registered as KDD 677P, the number plate had been altered to KDD 077P in an attempt to evade detection.
The vehicle was found parked outside a popular bar in Utawala. Upon approaching the scene, some occupants fled on foot, but police managed to apprehend Kelvin Kasyoki and Wilson Waweru, who were inside the car.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of several tools commonly used in house break-ins and car thefts. These included forged license plates, crowbars, and master keys capable of unlocking various car models.
Police confirmed that the suspects are in custody and are set to be arraigned in court as investigations continue. The car and recovered tools have been detained and will be presented as evidence in the ongoing case.
“The arrest of these suspects is a significant step toward restoring safety in Utawala. We are pursuing the remaining members of the gang,” said a DCI officer who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the investigation.
Residents have applauded the swift response by the authorities and urged continued surveillance in the area, which has seen a surge in theft and burglary cases in recent months.
The DCI has called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity as they work to dismantle criminal networks operating in the area.
