Two men have been arrested and arraigned in court over the horrific sexual abuse of a 12-year-old orphan in Mombasa, in a case that has shocked the country and raised alarm over the safety of vulnerable children.
According to the Anti-Human Trafficking and Child Protection Unit (AHTCPU), the ordeal began when the minor was standing at a bus stop, waiting to board a vehicle to school. She was approached by Anthony Jakaa Muganda, who posed as a Good Samaritan and offered her a lift. Instead of taking her to school, Muganda allegedly diverted to his home, where he defiled her before dropping her back at the bus stop and threatening her to keep silent.
As the traumatized girl tried to make sense of what had happened, she encountered another man—Reginald Wamalwa—who pretended to help. He took her to his house, where he allegedly indecently assaulted her. Wamalwa then escorted the child to a police station, attempting to report Muganda. However, in an act of remarkable courage, the girl revealed to officers that Wamalwa had also assaulted her.
Wamalwa was immediately arrested and taken to the Shanzu Law Courts for arraignment.
Following an intense manhunt, detectives tracked Muganda to Nyanchwa in Kisii town, where he had gone into hiding. He was arrested and transported back to Mombasa, where he was also arraigned at the Shanzu Law Courts on charges of defilement.
The minor is now under the care of child protection officers, receiving medical and psychological support.
Authorities have condemned the abuse in the strongest terms and vowed to pursue justice. “These acts are not only criminal but morally reprehensible,” said an AHTCPU official. “We commend the child for her bravery and will ensure she gets the protection and justice she deserves.”
