The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has opened a full investigation into the mysterious and tragic death of Father John Maina, a Catholic priest from Igwamiti Parish in Nyahururu, whose body was found with injuries along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.
Fr. Maina had last been seen on April 27, 2025, while attending the Silver Jubilee Anniversary of Igwamiti Catholic Parish and the ordination ceremony of Father Simon Thuita. The high-profile event was also attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and other politicians.
Nearly three weeks later, on May 15, the priest was discovered in distress near Diotomite stage by a passing motorcycle rider. Fr. Maina, who had sustained visible injuries to the left side of his head, reportedly told the rider that he had been abducted from Nyahururu. The rider rushed him to St. Joseph’s Mission Hospital in Gilgil, but sadly, the priest passed away minutes after arrival despite efforts to save his life.
His body was transferred to Nyahururu Sub-County Hospital mortuary for preservation and further examination. A post-mortem conducted on May 19 by government pathologist Dr. Ngulungu revealed that while Fr. Maina had sustained head bruises, they were not likely the cause of death. Samples have since been taken for toxicological analysis to determine whether foul play involving poisoning or drugging was involved.
DCI sources have confirmed that Fr. Maina was reportedly being followed by unknown individuals after the jubilee ceremony. It is alleged that the individuals were demanding a portion of money said to have been given to the priest by former Deputy President Gachagua during the event.
Additionally, unconfirmed reports suggest that the priest had previously expressed fear for his life, though no official complaint was ever lodged at any police station.
Detectives have since recorded several witness statements and are analyzing forensic evidence in a bid to piece together Fr. Maina’s final movements and identify those responsible for his death.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid speculation and unverified claims circulating on social media. "We are treating this matter with the seriousness it deserves. Our investigation team is committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring justice is served," a DCI spokesperson said.
Members of the public with any information that may aid the investigation are urged to contact the nearest police station or use the DCI’s toll-free hotlines: 999, 112, or #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203).
