In a significant stride toward digital inclusivity and youth empowerment, Uasin Gishu County on Friday launched the TechLabs Mashinani Caravan, an initiative aimed at bridging the digital gap and transforming communities through technology. The launch event, held at EldoHub offices in Eldoret, was officiated by County Secretary Mr. Philip Meli on behalf of Governor Jonathan Bii Chelilim.
The TechLabs Mashinani project is designed to promote digital literacy and innovation by taking technology directly to rural areas through mobile tech labs. These labs will provide training and access to digital tools for students and young entrepreneurs in remote locations.
Speaking at the event, Mr. Meli hailed the program as a game-changer for the region’s youth, encouraging them to shift from being passive consumers of technology to active creators and innovators.
“TechLabs Mashinani is the future,” Mr. Meli said. “I urge our youth to take advantage of this initiative and become part of the new generation of wealth creators in the technology industry.”
He pointed out the current trend of young people spending hours on social media platforms, contributing to the revenue of global tech companies without benefiting themselves. “It’s time we flipped that script,” he added.
The County Secretary also emphasized the county government’s broader commitment to digital equity through the Governor’s Stima Mashinani program, which is extending electricity and building ICT hubs in every ward. These efforts aim to give rural youth reliable access to the internet and digital education.
“Technology is now part of every career. Pilots use it in the cockpit, surgeons rely on it for procedures, and architects design buildings with it. Our youth must be equipped to compete in this digital age,” he noted.
The event featured the unveiling of EldoHub’s mobile tech lab—a fully equipped truck set to tour schools across the county, bringing essential digital tools and training to students who would otherwise be left behind.
Dignitaries present included the Chief Officer for ICT from Elgeyo Marakwet County and several other tech stakeholders and invited guests, all expressing support for the initiative and its potential to drive inclusive growth and innovation.
TechLabs Mashinani marks a vital step in ensuring that no one is left behind in Kenya’s digital transformation journey.
