Student Democracy in Action: Eldoret National Polytechnic Principal Hails Student Elections

The Chief Principal of The Eldoret National Polytechnic, Dr. Charles Koech, OGW, has commended the institution's ongoing student elections, describing them as a vital exercise in promoting democratic ideals and leadership skills among trainees.

Speaking during the election period, Dr. Koech emphasized the importance of student participation in leadership, noting that the electoral process serves as a key platform for nurturing a sense of civic duty and responsibility within the institution.

"As you are aware, the institution is currently hosting the student general elections. Through this process, trainees are given the opportunity to elect leaders who will champion their interests and represent their grievances to the administration," he said.

The elections, which come after successful amendments to the student constitution, reflect a renewed commitment by the student body to strengthen governance structures and inclusivity in leadership.

“We welcome this initiative because the students themselves participated in amending their constitution to better serve their needs, both now and in the future,” Dr. Koech stated.

He reaffirmed the administration’s full support for the process, stressing that the institution’s role is to provide an enabling environment for the elections to run efficiently and transparently. “Our role as the administration is to ensure the process runs smoothly and is properly facilitated in every necessary way,” he said.

To uphold the integrity of the elections, all aspiring candidates were subjected to a vetting process based on the eligibility criteria outlined in the revised student constitution. “Only those who qualify make it to the ballot,” he explained.

In a bid to ensure credibility, The Eldoret National Polytechnic partnered with the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). The electoral body trained student presiding officers, clerks, and commissioners, and is also overseeing the entire process.

“The process is guided by the IEBC. We involved them to train presiding officers, clerks, commissioners, and other officials. They are also overseeing the election to ensure it is free, fair, and credible,” Dr. Koech said.

He further lauded the students and candidates for demonstrating maturity and discipline throughout the electoral period. “Trainees have displayed a great deal of discipline. I wish all the candidates the very best as the elections continue and even after,” he concluded.

The student elections represent a significant milestone in the institution’s efforts to entrench participatory governance and promote leadership development among the youth, in line with national democratic values.
