Deputy President Commissions Rapsu Rural Electrification Project in Isiolo

Residents of Rapsu Village in Isiolo South Constituency celebrated a major milestone on Wednesday as Deputy President H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki officially commissioned the Rapsu Rural Electrification Project, bringing hope of improved livelihoods and economic development to the remote area.

The Deputy President was accompanied by Principal Secretary in the State Department for Energy, Alex Wachira, Isiolo County Governor H.E. Abdi Guyo, Woman Representative Hon. Mumina Bonaya, and a host of local leaders and government officials.

Speaking during the event, Prof. Kindiki emphasized the government’s commitment to enhancing access to electricity in underserved regions as part of Kenya’s broader development agenda. “This project is not just about lighting homes — it’s about powering opportunity, education, healthcare, and business growth in rural Kenya,” he said.

The Rapsu Rural Electrification Project is part of a wider initiative by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC), which is currently implementing 19 electrification projects across Isiolo North and South constituencies. Collectively, these projects aim to connect 533 households to the national grid.

PS Wachira reaffirmed the government’s focus on sustainable energy solutions, noting that electrification of rural areas is key to bridging the development gap between urban and rural Kenya. Governor Guyo praised the collaboration between national and county governments, stating that the project would significantly improve access to education and health services in the region.

Hon. Bonaya called on residents to take advantage of the electrification to pursue new economic opportunities, especially for women and youth-led enterprises.

Excited residents welcomed the development with song and dance, saying access to power will transform their lives. “Our children can now study at night, and we can start small businesses that were previously impossible,” said Fatuma Noor, a Rapsu resident.

The commissioning marks a significant step in the government's efforts to achieve universal electricity access and promote equity in infrastructure development.
