Shaping Futures: Inside Kanga school's Legacy of Success

By Godfrey Wamalwa

In the heart of Migori County, Kanga National School has become a shining example of how academic excellence and co-curricular brilliance can go hand in hand. As a national school drawing students from across Kenya, Kanga has cultivated a reputation for high academic performance, scientific innovation, and vibrant student life, making it one of the most admired learning institutions in the country.

At the helm of this success is Chief Principal Reuben Kodiango, a highly respected and beloved leader whose vision and commitment have propelled the school to new heights. His unwavering dedication to both academic achievement and the holistic growth of learners has earned him admiration from all corners of the education sector. Under his leadership, Kanga has thrived, producing disciplined, talented, and innovative students ready to take on the challenges of the modern world.

The school’s performance in the 2024 KCSE examinations speaks volumes. With 485 candidates sitting the exam, Kanga recorded a commendable mean score of 9.29854, reflecting a strong B+ average. Twenty-two students attained straight As, while 76 earned A- grades and 135 secured B+. Impressively, there were no grades below a C-, underscoring the school's consistency in maintaining academic excellence across the board. Pioneer Stream led the pack with a mean score of 9.516, followed closely by Pacesetter, Commander, and Torchbearer streams, all of which posted mean scores above 9.3. The lowest stream still managed an impressive 9.145, further emphasizing the school’s collective academic strength.

Beyond the classroom, Kanga is a hub for scientific innovation. Guided by its commitment to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), the school’s science department runs a wide range of activities that spark curiosity and creativity. In 2019, two students proudly represented Kenya at the semi-finals of the Interswitch Spark STEM Competition in Lagos, Nigeria. Two years later, in 2021, Kanga made national headlines when two of its students clinched the coveted Young Scientist of Kenya Award. This year, a new team is already preparing to participate in the competition’s qualifying stages, building on the school’s legacy of scientific excellence.

Equally impressive is Kanga’s vibrant co-curricular scene. Whether in drama, music, debate, sports, or community service, students are encouraged to pursue their passions and develop skills beyond the academic realm. These activities are more than just extras—they are woven into the fabric of school life, helping students become confident, expressive, and well-rounded individuals.

With modern facilities, a rich culture of discipline, and a visionary administration, Kanga School continues to produce top performers and future leaders. “We are not just educating students—we are shaping thinkers, creators, and citizens,” says Principal Kodiango, with pride in his voice.

From a rural setting in Migori to the national and international stage, Kanga National School stands tall as a true bedrock of academic excellence and co-curricular achievement—proving that indeed, at Kanga, academics and co-curricular activities are true bedfellows.
