National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has expressed profound sorrow following the assassination of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, describing the incident as a cowardly act that has robbed the nation of a fearless and dedicated leader.
In a solemn statement , Speaker Wetang’ula said he received the news of Hon. Were’s fatal shooting with “profound shock and unspeakable sorrow.” The legislator was gunned down in cold blood by unknown assailants along Ngong Road near City Mortuary in Nairobi.
“The late Hon. Were was serving his second term representing the people of Kasipul Constituency, having been elected to the National Assembly in 2017 and re-elected in the 2022 General Elections,” said Wetang’ula.
He described the slain MP as a distinguished lawmaker and a tireless advocate for the people of Kasipul. “This callous and cowardly act committed under the cover of night has robbed the nation of a fearless advocate, a servant leader, and a man deeply committed to democratic ideals and public service,” the Speaker added.
Wetang’ula called upon security and investigative agencies to carry out a thorough and transparent probe into the killing and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice without delay.
“This is not only a tragedy for the family and people of Kasipul but a loss to the entire nation. I urge all Kenyans to remain calm and allow due process to take its course during this period of national grief,” he said.
He confirmed that the leadership of Parliament is fully engaged in the matter and will continue to monitor the progress of investigations while maintaining close contact with the bereaved family.
“On behalf of the National Assembly, the Parliamentary Service Commission, and in my own capacity, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Hon. Ong’ondo Were, the people of Kasipul, and all Members of Parliament,” he stated.
“May his courage, service, and sacrifice never be forgotten. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Amen.”
