Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga has mourned the brutal killing of Kasipul Member of Parliament Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, describing him as a “gallant son of the soil” and condemning the assassination as a cowardly and heinous act.
In an emotional statement released shortly after news of the incident broke, Odinga expressed deep sorrow over the death of the second-term legislator, who was shot dead in cold blood by an unidentified gunman in Nairobi on Tuesday evening.
“We have lost a gallant son of the soil! Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were is no more; mercilessly and in cold blood, gunned down by an assassin in Nairobi this evening,” Raila said.
Odinga paid tribute to the late MP as a fearless and principled leader who stood firmly for justice and the rights of his people. “Rest in Peace Hon. Sir Charles Ong’ondo Were. Dhi gi kwe Ogai ma Milambo,” he added, using a Luo phrase meaning “Go in peace, son of the land of the hills.”
The opposition leader called on the government and security agencies to move swiftly and decisively to investigate the incident and apprehend the perpetrators. He warned that Kenya cannot afford to slide back into an era of political assassinations and violence.
“The nation must not remain silent in the face of such evil. We demand an immediate and transparent investigation. This is not just an attack on an individual, but on democracy itself,” Raila stated.
The killing of Hon. Were has sent shockwaves across the political spectrum, with leaders from both government and opposition calling for calm and justice as the country comes to terms with the loss.
The late MP was a vocal advocate for his constituents and a respected figure in Parliament, known for championing education and community development initiatives in Kasipul.
