As Africa’s healthcare system is grappling with an alarming shortage of medical professionals, St. George’s University (SGU) School of Medicine in Grenada is stepping forward with renewed commitment.
The internationally renowned medical institution has officially opened applications for its Fall 2025 intake, specifically inviting aspiring doctors from across the African continent to be part of a global solution.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that Africa will face a staggering shortfall of 6.1 million healthcare workers by 2030. SGU, which has placed over 1,035 graduates into U.S. residency programs in 2025 alone, is addressing this crisis by offering African students access to world-class medical education, financial support, and international clinical exposure.
David Anthonisz, Executive Director of International Student Recruitment at SGU, emphasized the university’s mission: “We are thrilled to support African students aiming to join our August/September cohort. At SGU, we are committed to advancing medical education to develop a strong medical workforce capable of meeting global healthcare demands.”
Located on the picturesque island of Grenada in the West Indies, SGU offers students from all educational backgrounds a pathway to the Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree.
Whether through four-year programs or longer pathways for high school graduates, the university provides the tools, mentorship, and global clinical exposure necessary for a successful career in medicine.
In addition to its flagship campus in Grenada, SGU has partnered with Northumbria University in the UK since 2007.
This collaboration allows students to complete part of their studies in the United Kingdom, with September and January intake options available. The flexible enrollment dates—January, April, and August—allow students to tailor their start to their academic readiness and personal circumstances.
The August intake in particular aligns with the global academic calendar, enabling African students to transition smoothly after completing their final exams.
SGU’s commitment extends beyond academics. The university offers a range of financial aid packages and academic scholarships, ensuring that cost is not a barrier for talented students. Eligible applicants can apply for multiple scholarships, each recognizing merit, need, or unique achievements.
“Our continued commitment to supporting aspiring doctors from Africa underscores our mission to foster inclusivity and broaden global access to medical education,” Anthonisz added.
