Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has expressed deep sorrow following the untimely and tragic death of Fr. John Maina Ndegwa, the Parish Priest of Igwamiti Parish in Nyandarua County.
In a heartfelt statement, Mr. Gachagua described the late Fr. John as “a great soul and a true shepherd of the Lord’s flock,” praising him for his unwavering commitment to truth and courage in speaking out, even in challenging times.
“Fr. John lived in truth and spoke the truth without fear or favour, just as Christ would have done. His passing is not just a loss to the Catholic Church but to the entire nation,” Gachagua stated.
Recalling their close friendship, Gachagua shared that he had recently been hosted by Fr. John for his silver jubilee celebrations, just two weeks before his death. “He gave a powerful sermon and spoke his mind candidly on the state of the nation. We had many conversations on national issues over the years. He was not just a spiritual guide but a personal friend and counselor,” he said.
The former Deputy President called upon the security agencies to act with urgency in investigating the murder and ensuring that those responsible are brought to justice. “This heinous act must not go unpunished. I urge our security agencies to move swiftly and decisively.”
He extended his condolences to the Bishop and the Catholic Diocese of Nyahururu, the Catholic faithful of Igwamiti Parish, and the wider Catholic fraternity.
“I pray to Almighty God to rest the soul of Fr. John in eternal peace and may perpetual light shine upon him forever,” he concluded.
The late Fr. John Maina Ndegwa was widely known for his outspoken nature, commitment to pastoral service, and his engagement in societal and national matters. His death has sent shockwaves across the country, with many leaders and faithful mourning his loss.
