Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital has achieved a major milestone in pediatric healthcare by successfully performing its first laparoscopic surgery. The landmark procedure, carried out this week, marks a significant step forward in advancing minimally invasive surgical care for children in the region.
The surgery was conducted on a 4-year-old boy diagnosed with an undescended testis. The pediatric surgical team performed a first-stage laparoscopic orchidopexy using advanced minimally invasive techniques. Rather than requiring a large abdominal incision, the procedure was completed through a single 5mm port and two 3mm instrument sites. Remarkably, the young patient was awake and ready for discharge shortly after the operation.
“This successful procedure not only improves outcomes for children but also reduces recovery time and postoperative pain,” said Dr. Peter Saula, Head of the Pediatric Surgery Department. “It represents a major leap forward in how we deliver surgical care to our youngest patients.”
The achievement was made possible through the leadership and commitment of MTRH CEO Dr. Philip Kirwa and Dr. Saula, both of whom have been strong advocates for expanding laparoscopic capabilities at the hospital.
“This is just the beginning,” said Dr. Kirwa. “As we look ahead, we hope to build on this foundation to increase access to minimally invasive surgery for children across the region.”
The historic operation was the result of a coordinated team effort. The operating theatre team, led by Nurse Manager Herbert Oloo, ensured seamless planning and execution. Additional support came from the anesthesia, nursing, biomedical, supply chain, and cleaning teams—all of whom played crucial roles in the successful outcome.
With this milestone, MTRH Shoe4Africa Children’s Hospital positions itself as a pioneer in pediatric surgical innovation, reinforcing its commitment to delivering world-class healthcare to children in Kenya and beyond.
