Moi University Vice Chancellor Prof. Kiplagat Kotut has assured stakeholders that the institution is not on the brink of collapse, but rather undergoing strategic reforms to address long-standing challenges. Speaking during the launch of the second phase of the university's renewable energy project, Prof. Kotut emphasized that bold decisions are being taken to stabilize and revitalize the institution.
"People who think Moi is dying died a long time ago. The administration is actively addressing these challenges to ensure the institution is restored and strengthened," he said.
The Vice Chancellor acknowledged the financial and operational difficulties that have affected the university in recent years, including a controversial retrenchment of 900 staff members. He described the move as a painful but necessary step to safeguard the university's sustainability.
Kotut noted that the university has identified the root causes of its challenges, which has made it easier to formulate appropriate and effective solutions. Among the key strategies is the implementation of a large-scale solar energy project aimed at cutting costs and reducing dependence on the national power grid.
The latest phase of the project, implemented by Afriwatt Engineering Ltd at a cost of Ksh 4.2 million, involved the installation of a 51.7KW Solar PV Grid Tie Solution. This renewable energy system is expected to increase the university’s energy savings from 11.12% to 32.3% and reduce reliance on the national power grid by up to 36.9%.
“The solar energy project is one of the critical strategies in our turnaround plan. It’s not only environmentally sustainable but also financially prudent,” Kotut stated.
He further emphasized that the university will continue leveraging strategic partnerships to achieve its goals and restore its reputation as one of Kenya’s leading academic institutions.
Despite the challenges, Prof. Kotut remains optimistic that with deliberate action and commitment, Moi University will emerge stronger and more resilient.
