We bid farewell to Madam Margaret Rugut Kibogy, celebrating an extraordinary nine year tenure as Managing Director of Kenya Dairy Board and the first woman to hold this esteemed position since its inception in 1958. Her visionary leadership has not only transformed the dairy industry but cemented Kenya’s place as a global competitor in dairy excellence.
Under her stewardship, the sector witnessed groundbreaking milestones, including the gazettement and implementation of the Dairy Industry Regulations, 2021, which strengthened governance frameworks and ensured sustainability. She championed minimum guaranteed producer prices, creating a fair and predictable market environment that safeguarded dairy farmers and contributed to an industry valued at Ksh 300 billion.
Her commitment to quality assurance led to the establishment of the state-of-the-art National Dairy Regulatory Laboratory, reinforcing consumer confidence by ensuring stringent safety and compliance standards. Meanwhile, her focus on market expansion fueled the growth of formally marketed milk from 591 million litres in 2017 to 900.8 million litres in 2024, while exports skyrocketed from Ksh 0.31 billion to Ksh 9.4 billion, solidifying Kenya’s dairy industry on the global stage.
Beyond regulatory achievements, Madam Margaret spearheaded institutional strengthening, overseeing the successful construction of Kenya Dairy Board’s Head Office, expanding regional presence, automating core processes for efficiency, and fostering industry growth by attracting new processors and mini dairies.
Her leadership has also earned notable accolades, including the Agricultural Champion of the Year by the East Africa Women of Excellence Awards and recognition from the Women on Boards Network Awards as CEO of the Year. Under her guidance, Kenya Dairy Board itself received multiple industry awards, further exemplifying her unwavering dedication.
By leveraging strategic partnerships and digital transformation, she has expanded Kenya Dairy Board’s presence across social media platforms, showcasing Kenya’s dairy success stories to a global audience.
As Madam Margaret hands over the mantle, we thank her for her remarkable contributions, her visionary leadership, and her unyielding commitment to elevating Kenya’s dairy sector. Her legacy will endure, shaping the industry for generations to come.
