Gatundu North Member of Parliament Elijah Njoroge Kururia has called on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party to take firm action against members who have defected or aligned themselves with other political outfits, insisting that loyalty and discipline must be upheld within the ruling party.
In a strongly-worded statement delivered during a constituency development meeting in Kiambu County, Kururia urged the party leadership to immediately begin the process of de-whipping all legislators and officials who have either joined rival parties or are openly working against UDA’s agenda.
“You can’t serve in two parties,” Kururia said. “If you no longer believe in the party that sponsored you to office, the honourable thing to do is resign. Vie as an independent like I did, instead of undermining your party from within.”
Kururia, who was elected as an Independent candidate in the 2022 General Election after parting ways with mainstream parties, emphasized that political integrity demands consistency and transparency. He accused some leaders of political dishonesty, arguing that their shifting allegiances are hurting governance and eroding public trust.
He also expressed concern that disloyal members were derailing the party’s unity and focus, especially as the country begins preparing for the 2027 polls.
“Party discipline is not a suggestion—it is a cornerstone of democratic governance,” he added. “UDA must send a clear message that betrayal of the party’s principles and mission will not be tolerated.”
Kururia's remarks come at a time of increasing political realignments, with several leaders reportedly warming up to emerging coalitions and movements across the country. His comments are likely to stir debate within UDA's leadership circles as the party positions itself for the next electoral contest.
