Eldoret National Polytechnic Takes Course Awareness Drive to West Pokot via Kalya FM

In a bid to boost awareness and enrollment among prospective students in West Pokot County, senior officials from the Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP) were live on Kalya FM this morning, engaging listeners on available academic and technical programs at the institution.

The live radio session, aired between 8:00 AM and 9:00 AM, featured Solomon Kili, the Registrar in charge of Administration, and Evelyn Rotich, the Head of Department for Hospitality and Institutional Management. The duo used the platform to demystify course offerings, especially under the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) model, and to encourage potential trainees to consider technical education as a viable path to employment and entrepreneurship.

“We are here to let young people and parents in West Pokot know that there are flexible and practical learning options at Eldoret National Polytechnic,” said Mr. Kili. “We are emphasizing CBET modularized courses, Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), and dual training programs, which combine classroom knowledge with industry experience.”

Flexible, Skills-Focused Education

CBET courses, which focus on practical, hands-on skills training, have become central to Kenya’s efforts to reform the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) sector. Eldoret National Polytechnic is among the institutions leading the rollout of modular learning, allowing students to take courses in blocks and re-enter the system at any time—a flexibility that appeals to working learners and those from remote areas.

“For example, someone with experience in catering or tailoring but no formal certification can now be assessed and awarded qualifications through RPL,” explained Ms. Rotich. “This gives dignity and recognition to skills acquired outside the classroom.”

Connecting Learning to Industry

The officials also highlighted dual training, a growing approach where students split their time between classroom instruction and hands-on training in partner industries. This model has proven effective in improving employability among graduates.

“We want to equip our trainees with not just certificates but real, market-ready skills,” said Mr. Kili.

Outreach to Marginalized Regions

This outreach comes as part of TENP’s broader mission to reach learners in underrepresented counties, including West Pokot, Turkana, and parts of Elgeyo Marakwet. The institution is keen on promoting inclusivity in technical training, particularly for young people who may lack access to higher education opportunities.

Listeners who called into the program praised the initiative and sought further guidance on how to enroll, apply for government capitation, and access accommodation and support services.

Enrollment Open

Enrollment for May and September intakes is currently ongoing. Prospective students are encouraged to visit www.tenp.ac.ke or contact the admissions office for more information.
