Eldoret, Kenya – The Eldoret National Polytechnic (TENP) is gearing up for its upcoming student elections after formally addressing eligibility concerns that had raised tensions among the student body. In a memo released on May 12, 2025, the institution’s Dean of Students, Mr. Chemitai, confirmed that the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the TENPSU Student Council have jointly finalized and clarified the eligibility criteria for aspiring candidates.
A key issue that had sparked debate was the interpretation of Clause XIII of the student constitution, which previously restricted candidacy to students within a four-year academic period. This clause, which critics labeled as exclusionary—particularly for students enrolled in the modular KNEC and CDAAC programs—has now been revised to allow greater flexibility.
“Clause XIII… has been flagged as potentially exclusionary,” the memo read, noting that it will now be applied “on a case-by-case basis” to ensure no student is unfairly barred from contesting due to their unique academic trajectory.
The memo also emphasized the administration’s dedication to fostering an inclusive and democratic electoral environment. “The entire TENPSU Council… have worked diligently and inclusively to deliver a progressive, inclusive, and forward-looking student constitution,” it stated.
Hard copies of the updated constitution have been made available for student reference, and preparations for the election process are already underway.
The announcement has been welcomed by students and stakeholders as a step toward a more representative and participatory student leadership. The forthcoming elections are expected to set a precedent for transparent and equitable governance at the institution.
