Counties Unite to Boost Fish Farming!

In a major push to revolutionize fish farming in Kenya, Uasin Gishu’s County Executive Committee Member for Agriculture, Dr. Sam Kottut, on Tuesday played host to a high-profile delegation from the Council of Governors’ Blue Economy and Fisheries Committee. The visit was part of a nationwide aquaculture engagement tour aimed at strengthening sustainable fish farming and promoting county-to-county collaboration.

Led by Mercy Gatabi and Grace Kimani, the delegation is crisscrossing the country, meeting with fish farmers, gathering real-world stories, and documenting innovations and hurdles in aquaculture. Their findings will feed into a comprehensive booklet focused on climate-resilient fisheries—an essential guide designed to help counties learn from one another and drive the blue economy forward.

“This initiative presents a great opportunity for counties to collaborate and share knowledge,” said Dr. Kottut. “It will not only help farmers venture into fish farming but also strengthen food security and economic growth in rural areas. Governor Bii’s agenda is clear: uplift the farming community through innovation and support.”

Dr. Kottut praised the initiative’s potential to empower local farmers and spotlight the value of modern, sustainable aquaculture practices. He emphasized how the program aligns with the vision of Uasin Gishu Governor H.E. Jonathan Bii, who has consistently advocated for agricultural diversification and tech-driven farming.

Also present was Mr. Nixon Cheplong, the county’s Livestock Chief Officer, who shared plans to develop a tailored fish farming policy that meets the unique needs of Uasin Gishu farmers.

The engagement signals a growing national commitment to using aquaculture as a tool for youth employment, rural transformation, and food security—one fish pond at a time.
