Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has officially been admitted to the Bar as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, marking what he described as a historic milestone in his lifelong pursuit of justice for ordinary Kenyans.
In a powerful statement issued Thursday, Owino reflected on his difficult upbringing in Nyalenda slums, where he witnessed systemic police brutality and rights violations that deeply shaped his sense of justice. "Growing up, I watched helplessly as law enforcement harassed and humiliated the people—my own mother included—without regard for their rights or dignity," he said.
He recounted painful experiences of his mother being arrested and physically assaulted by police officers instead of being arraigned in court. These formative moments, he noted, inspired him to study law with the goal of standing up for the voiceless.
"This achievement is not about personal grandiosity," Owino declared. "It is about sharpening the tools of service. The law is now a new battlefield where I will fight even harder for justice, equity, and the rights of the common mwananchi."
Having previously championed legislative reforms from within Parliament, the legislator now plans to complement his activism with legal action. He promised to use his legal credentials to challenge government inaction, push for economic justice, and demand accountability from public institutions.
"The government should brace itself for more lethal arguments in defense of Kenyans—both in Parliament and now in court," Owino warned, signaling a combative new phase in his political and legal activism.
With his admission to the Bar, Babu Owino joins a small group of lawmakers who are also licensed advocates, a move that enhances his capacity to litigate public interest cases.
"The revolution continues—now with a gown and a gavel," he concluded. "So, help me, God."
His supporters have celebrated the milestone as a testament to resilience and a deepening of his commitment to social justice.
