A Brighter Future for Langas Children with Disabilities

By Baraka Simba

As the world observed World Press Freedom Day, the Uasin Gishu Journalists Association turned their spotlight to a heartwarming initiative making a difference in the lives of children with disabilities. Journalists visited the Sparkling Haven Foundation in Langas, where parents, caregivers, and stakeholders issued an emotional and urgent appeal for increased support.

Founded in 2023, Sparkling Haven Foundation has quickly established itself as a vital sanctuary for children living with disabilities in Langas and the neighboring areas. The center offers therapy, basic education, emotional support, and a safe space for children with conditions such as autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and other developmental challenges. Yet, despite its profound impact, the foundation is grappling with a lack of resources that threatens its ability to serve the growing number of families seeking help.

Among the parents who shared their stories was Rose Kavuli, mother to a child diagnosed with autism. Fighting back tears, Kavuli described her long and difficult journey trying to access proper care for her child, a journey that eventually led her to Sparkling Haven.

“Before this center, we were lost,” said Kavuli. “I had to travel long distances to get even the most basic therapy sessions. Now that we have this facility, our lives have improved, but we still face so many hurdles. We call on our friends and well-wishers to stand with us. Our hope is that the government and private partners can come on board and help us build a better future for our children.”

Kavuli’s sentiments were echoed by Dr. Gerald Kiplimo, a medical professional and long-time supporter of the foundation. Dr. Kiplimo emphasized the urgent need for specialized equipment and more spacious facilities to ensure effective therapy.

“About 70% of the children we serve need supportive materials—ranging from sensory tools to mobility aids,” he said. “The equipment is very costly and out of reach for many families. Additionally, the therapy room we currently have is not sufficient. It limits our ability to provide intensive, one-on-one care that these children desperately need.”

According to Dr. Kiplimo, many children require frequent occupational, speech, and physical therapy sessions, but due to the lack of resources, some only receive therapy once a week or less. This limited access undermines their developmental progress.

The foundation’s director, Elizabeth Njeri, highlighted the organization’s humble beginnings and its commitment to serving all children, regardless of their background or condition. She praised the dedication of the caregivers and volunteers but acknowledged that their mission is becoming increasingly difficult to sustain without more outside assistance.

“We started with just a few children in a borrowed space. Today, we have over 40 children enrolled, and the number is growing,” Njeri shared. “We are grateful for every contribution we've received, but to truly make a long-term impact, we need consistent support. We envision a fully equipped therapy center, a special education wing, and even a small transport van to help children from remote areas get here safely.”

She also stressed the importance of awareness in fighting the stigma that still surrounds disabilities in many Kenyan communities. “Many families still hide their children because of shame or misinformation. We want to change that narrative and show that these children are capable, valuable, and full of potential.”

As journalists engaged with the children and staff, the spirit of resilience, love, and hope was palpable. However, the underlying message remained clear—more help is needed.

The Uasin Gishu Journalists Association, in marking Press Freedom Day with a community-centered approach, pledged to use their platforms to amplify the voices of families living with disabilities and help draw attention to Sparkling Haven’s cause.

With continued advocacy, community involvement, and institutional support, there is hope that Sparkling Haven Foundation will grow into the fully-fledged support center that children with disabilities in Uasin Gishu County—and beyond—deserve.

To support or learn more about Sparkling Haven Foundation, members of the public are encouraged to reach out directly or visit the center located in Langas, Eldoret.
