Trans Nzoia Deputy Speaker Mwale Obed Mahanga Accuses Uasin Gishu Leaders of Tribal Bias

By Wasike Elvis

Trans Nzoia County Assembly Deputy Speaker Mwale Obed Mahanga has launched a scathing attack on what he describes as entrenched tribalism in neighboring Uasin Gishu County, while defending the inclusive leadership style of Governor George Natembeya.

Speaking at a public forum in Kitale , Mahanga dismissed claims of ethnic exclusion within Natembeya’s administration, stating that the governor’s office employs a diverse team drawn from across the county’s many communities.

“The drivers of Hon. Natembeya are Kalenjins, the head of his security team is a Sabaot, and the team includes members of the Nandi, Sabaot, and every other community living in Trans Nzoia. That is what leadership should look like — inclusive and unifying,” said Mahanga.

Turning his focus to Senator Samson Cherargei of Nandi County, Mahanga challenged him to disclose how many Bukusu individuals he has employed in his team, accusing him and other Rift Valley leaders of hypocrisy in their criticism of Natembeya.

“Cherargei, can you tell us how many Bukusu people you’ve employed? Because here in Trans Nzoia, every community has a stake. Before you point fingers, look in the mirror,” he added.

Mahanga also took a swipe at former Uasin Gishu Governor Jackson Mandago, alleging that he oversaw the removal of a Luhya vice chancellor from Moi University — an action he says was motivated by tribal considerations.

“Mandago engineered the removal of a qualified Luhya vice chancellor from Moi University. That was not about merit — it was pure tribal politics,” he claimed.

The Deputy Speaker, who has announced his intention to run for the Trans Nzoia Senate seat in 2027, vowed to continue speaking candidly on issues affecting the region, even if it ruffles feathers.

“I will continue to speak my mind, regardless of the consequences, because the truth must be told. Silence in the face of injustice is betrayal, and our people deserve leaders who stand for fairness and inclusion,” said Mahanga.

His remarks are likely to heighten political tensions in the Rift Valley as the 2027 election season begins to take shape, with ethnic dynamics and leadership fairness expected to be key campaign issues.
