Government Intensifies Crackdown on Banditry and Cattle Rustling in Eastern and Rift Valley Regions – CS Murkomen

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to eradicating banditry and cattle rustling in the Eastern and Rift Valley regions, citing notable progress made through recent security interventions.

Speaking during a high-level regional security meeting held in Isiolo Town, CS Murkomen noted a significant decline in incidents of banditry and cattle theft, attributing the improvement to increased collaboration between national and county security teams, targeted operations, and resource optimization across the affected areas.

“While we have witnessed a commendable reduction in these crimes, there are still pockets of resistance that continue to pose a threat to peace and livelihoods. Our resolve is unwavering—we are intensifying operations in these hotspots until security is fully restored,” said Murkomen.

The meeting brought together regional security teams from Eastern and Rift Valley, including county and sub-county security leadership from Isiolo, Meru, Laikipia, Samburu, and Marsabit. Present were Sub-County Security Teams, Assistant County Commissioners (ACCs), Officers Commanding Stations (OCSs), Chiefs, and Assistant Chiefs from areas still grappling with insecurity due to bandit activity.

Deliberations focused on recalibrating operations and leveraging available resources more effectively to achieve sustainable peace. The Interior CS emphasized the importance of local leadership in intelligence gathering, community engagement, and conflict resolution.

“We must align our security strategies with the realities on the ground. Chiefs and local administrators are central to this mission—they are the government’s first responders and must remain proactive in deterring criminal elements,” he added.

CS Murkomen was accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of the Kenya Police Service Eliud Lagat, Eastern Regional Commissioner Paul Rotich, Rift Valley Regional Commissioner Dr. Abdi Hassan, as well as Regional Police Commanders Charles Naibei and Jasper Ombati, and Administration Police Commanders Lusweti Barasa and John Amadadi. Also present were senior officials from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.

The forum resolved to scale up multi-agency operations in the most affected zones, enhance inter-county coordination, and reinforce the deployment of specialized security units where needed. Emphasis was also placed on improving the welfare and mobility of officers operating in remote and volatile areas.

The Interior Ministry continues to work closely with local leaders, community elders, and youth to address the root causes of banditry and promote lasting peace in Northern Kenya.

“Security is not just the absence of conflict—it is the presence of justice, opportunity, and collaboration. We will not rest until every Kenyan, regardless of their location, can live without fear,” concluded CS Murkomen
