KTDA National Chair Calls for Transparency and Collaboration in the Tea Sector

 By John Kariuki

The Kenya Tea Development Agency (KTDA) National Chairman, Mr. Geoffrey Chege Kirundi, has underscored the importance of transparency and collaboration in the tea sector, stating that these principles will create an enabling environment that empowers farmers, enhances productivity, and increases the value of Kenyan tea in both local and international markets.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Tea Industry Performance Report Summit held in Mombasa, Mr. Kirundi emphasized KTDA’s renewed commitment to prioritizing farmers in all its business pillars under the "Farmers First" initiative. His sentiments were echoed by Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, who reinforced the government's support for reforms aimed at strengthening the sector.

“The tea sector is not just an agricultural industry; it is a lifeline for many households, a source of livelihood, and a testament to the resilience and determination of our farmers,” said Mr. Kirundi.

Kenya remains a global leader in quality tea production, with millions of farmers depending on the industry for their economic well-being. The renewed focus on farmer-centric policies, improved governance, and better market positioning is expected to drive sustainable growth and increase the competitiveness of Kenyan tea on the global stage.

The event was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Tea Board of Kenya, Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock Development, Ketepa Ltd, KTDA Foundation, Majani Insurance Brokers Ltd, Temec Ltd, Nduti Tea Factory, Mungania Tea Factory, Agricultural Society of Kenya, and various county governments, reaffirming their collective commitment to advancing the tea sector.

With the tea industry being a major economic pillar for Kenya, stakeholders are urged to embrace transparency, accountability, and collaboration to safeguard farmers’ interests and enhance the sustainability of the sector.
