The Elgeyo/Marakwet County Assembly has announced the resignation of Hon. Philemon Kiplagat Sabulei, who has served as the Speaker of the Assembly for the past seven years. His resignation took effect on January 30, 2025.
Hon. Sabulei, who was first sworn in as Speaker in 2017, was re-elected for a second term in 2022. During his tenure, he played a significant role in shaping the legislative landscape and promoting good governance within the county. Notably, in his second term, Hon. Sabulei was also elected as the Chairperson of the County Assemblies Forum (CAF), the umbrella body representing all 47 county assemblies in Kenya.
The County Assembly expressed its appreciation for Hon. Sabulei’s leadership and unwavering commitment to the development of Elgeyo/Marakwet. In a statement, the Assembly acknowledged his contributions in strengthening the legislative framework and promoting governance for the people of the county and the nation at large.
"The Assembly extends its deepest gratitude to Hon. Sabulei for his exceptional service. His leadership will always be remembered," the statement read.
With Hon. Sabulei’s resignation, the County Assembly will now embark on the process of electing a new Speaker in line with the legal provisions.
The Assembly reaffirmed its dedication to continuing its work and prioritizing the needs and progress of the people of Elgeyo/Marakwet as it prepares for this leadership transition.
“We wish Hon. Sabulei all the best in his future endeavors,” the statement concluded.
