The Training and Production Centre for the Shoe Industry (TPCSI), a pivotal institution under the Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC), has been at the forefront of transforming the leather sector in Kenya. Through its efforts, the center has been empowering Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) by offering high-quality leather products at subsidized rates. More importantly, it provides invaluable skills training for individuals, equipping them for self-reliance and employment opportunities in the growing leather industry.
Earlier today, the Livestock Development Principal Secretary, Hon. Jonathan Mueke, alongside the KLDC CEO, Dr. Noor, visited the TPCSI in Thika to assess the facility and explore ways to enhance its capacity. The goal is to ensure that the center can continue to offer quality services that meet the evolving needs of Kenyans, particularly in the footwear and leather goods sectors.
Kenya’s leather industry is experiencing rapid growth, and with the imminent completion of the country’s first Leather Industrial Park in Machakos County, the need for a skilled workforce has never been more critical. Leather production volumes are increasing, and the country requires a sufficient number of trained technicians, artisans, and staff to meet the demands of this burgeoning sector.
During the visit, PS Jonathan Mueke emphasized the potential of replicating such specialized facilities across Kenya to further support the expanding leather industry. These institutions could serve as general manufacturing hubs for MSMEs, offering crucial extension services and fostering growth within local communities.
Additionally, Hon. Susan Mang'eni, the Principal Secretary for the State Department of MSMEs Development, along with Dr. Juma Mukhwana, underscored the importance of scaling up such initiatives to ensure that the benefits of the growing leather sector reach all corners of the country.
The vision is clear by investing in training and expanding production capacities, Kenya’s leather industry can become a beacon of economic empowerment and self-sufficiency for its citizens. With these efforts, the nation is poised to make great strides in its industrial development, offering sustainable opportunities for the MSME sector and contributing to the broader goal of economic prosperity.
