Dispute Resolution Clears Path for Land Titles in Trans Nzoia Informal Settlements

A contentious dispute threatening a landmark land regularization project in Maridadi informal settlement has been resolved, officials announced, paving the way for hundreds of residents to receive title deeds under a World Bank-backed initiative.
Trans Nzoia County Chief Officer for Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development, Dr. Roselyne Nasiebanda, praised local committees for mediating the conflict between residents and the Maridadi Cooperative Society, which had jeopardized the Kenya Informal Settlements Improvement Project Phase 2 (KISIP 2).
The project, a collaboration between national and county governments and the World Bank, aims to formalize land ownership in three informal settlements, benefiting over 250 households.
Speaking at a public engagement meeting in Maridadi on Tuesday, Nasiebanda warned that unresolved grievances could derail the initiative, now in its final stages.
“Governor George Natembeya remains committed to ensuring every resident secures land ownership documents,” she said, urging community cooperation.
The dispute centered on plot allocations, but the cooperative agreed to retain its designated land, removing objections.
“We have no further issues,” said Rev. Benedict Wanyama, the cooperative’s chairman.
County Project Coordinator Edith Barasa emphasized that public participation is critical to the project’s success.
“Any objections could hinder progress,” she stated, noting that over 78 Maridadi households are poised to receive titles.
KISIP 2 Social Safeguards Officer Pamela Indimuli assured residents their input is prioritized to ensure “amicable conclusions.” Surveyors confirmed mapping is complete, with documents sent to Nairobi for title printing.
The project, also impacting Shimola, Tewa, and Khalabana settlements, seeks to spur economic growth by granting legal land rights. Officials highlighted minimal disruption to residents during the process.
The meeting was attended by County Project Coordination Committee members Peter Mesis (Water and Sanitation), Dr. Peter Masinde (Public Health), and GBV focal person Collins Wekesa.
