Ruto Pledges Full Government Support for Nairobi 2029 World Athletics Championships
President William Ruto has pledged full government support to ensure Kenya successfully hosts the 2029 World Athletics Championships in Nairobi, following a meeting with World Athletics President Lord Sebastian Coe at State Lodge Eldoret in Uasin Gishu County.
Ruto said Kenya was grateful for the opportunity to host the prestigious global athletics competition, describing the event as an important milestone for the country and a chance to showcase its sporting excellence to the world.
The President gave his personal commitment, alongside that of the government, to mobilise the resources required to ensure the championships are successfully organised.
He said the government would deploy all available resources to prepare the country for the international event, which is expected to bring together top athletes from across the world.
During the meeting, Ruto and Coe also discussed preparations at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, in Nairobi, which will host the championships.
The President noted that the facility is undergoing major upgrades ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), with further improvements planned to meet the requirements of the 2029 athletics competition.
The upgrades are expected to strengthen Kenya's capacity to host major international sporting events while improving facilities for athletes, officials and spectators.
Kenya's selection to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships marks a significant achievement for the country's athletics sector, which has earned global recognition through the performances of its athletes in middle- and long-distance races.
The championships will also provide an opportunity to promote Kenya as an international sports destination, attract visitors and investment, and create economic opportunities for businesses in tourism, hospitality, transport and other sectors.
Ruto's commitment comes as the country prepares to host AFCON 2027 alongside Tanzania and Uganda, placing Kenya at the centre of preparations for two major international sporting events within a relatively short period.
The government is expected to continue working with World Athletics and other stakeholders to ensure the necessary infrastructure, logistics and organisational arrangements are in place ahead of the 2029 championships.
The meeting with Coe underscores the importance of collaboration between the government and international sports governing bodies in delivering a successful event and strengthening Kenya's position on the global athletics stage.
