Ruto Honours Raila at Bondo Mausoleum, Hails Late Former PM as Champion of Democracy and Unity

President William Ruto has paid tribute to the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, describing him as a once-in-a-generation leader whose courage, sacrifice and decades of public service helped shape Kenya’s democratic journey.

Speaking on Wednesday during the handover and dedication of the Raila Amolo Odinga Mausoleum at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo, Siaya County, President Ruto said the late opposition chief would be remembered as a patriot, Pan-Africanist and statesman who remained committed to freedom, justice and a more democratic Kenya.

Ruto said Raila’s contribution to the country went beyond his political career, noting that his role in advancing democracy, devolution and national unity had left a lasting mark on Kenya.

The President said the mausoleum would help preserve Raila’s memory and provide future generations with an opportunity to understand the former Prime Minister’s contribution to the country.

Ruto also highlighted the symbolism behind the mausoleum’s five-sided design, linking it to the ODM Pentagon of 2007 and describing the number five as representing unity, togetherness and completion. He recalled working alongside Raila during that period, saying the late leader played a role in building bridges across communities.

The President formally handed over the completed mausoleum to Raila’s widow, Mama Ida Odinga, during the ceremony attended by members of the Odinga family, political leaders, religious leaders and other dignitaries.

The event comes nearly one year after Raila’s death in October 2025 and as the country continues to honour his life and legacy. Raila was laid to rest at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo in a state burial attended by national and international dignitaries.

Ruto said Raila’s legacy should not only be preserved through the mausoleum but also through continued efforts to advance the values and ideals for which he stood.

“His contribution to democracy, devolution and national unity will live on,” Ruto said, adding that Raila’s legacy should inspire future generations to protect and strengthen Kenya’s democratic inheritance.
