Natembeya Security Withdrawal Sparks Outrage as Allies Demand Immediate Reinstatement
A section of leaders and supporters of Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has strongly condemned the reported withdrawal of his security detail, terming the move politically motivated and demanding its immediate reinstatement.
In a press statement, the group accused the authorities responsible for the decision of attempting to intimidate and silence the governor, who has been vocal on issues affecting residents of Trans Nzoia County.
The group described the withdrawal as a threat to the governor's safety and called on the government to restore his security without conditions.
“The security of a Governor is not a privilege granted by the State, it is a constitutional right and a matter of national security,” the statement read.
The group further argued that withdrawing the governor's security was reckless and an abuse of power, warning that such a move could undermine democratic principles and the system of devolution.
It also declared its unwavering support for Natembeya, insisting that it would not be intimidated or silenced over the matter.
“We stand firmly and ready with Governor Natembeya. Any threat to him is a threat to democracy, devolution, and the will of the people of Trans Nzoia and Kenya at large,” the statement added.
The group called for the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of the governor's security detail.
However, the circumstances surrounding the reported withdrawal, the official reasons for the decision and the response from the relevant security authorities were not provided in the statement.
The development comes amid renewed calls for accountability and respect for the constitutional role of elected leaders, with the governor's supporters insisting that his safety must be guaranteed as he carries out his official duties.
