Mami Mwega Backs Environmental Professionals Bill to Protect Natural Resources

Mami Mwega has welcomed the passage of the Environmental Professionals Institute of Kenya Bill by the National Assembly, saying the proposed law will strengthen accountability and professionalism in environmental management.

The legislator said she supported the Bill, sponsored by Ndaragwa MP George Gachagua, which seeks to establish an institute responsible for registering, licensing and regulating environmental professionals across the country.

She noted that professionals entrusted with assessing development projects and safeguarding natural resources must possess the necessary qualifications and be accountable for their work.

For Nyandarua County, she said, the legislation is particularly significant given the importance of forests, rivers and farmland to livelihoods, agriculture and the country's wider environmental sustainability.

She emphasised that development projects should undergo professional environmental assessments to ensure that economic progress does not come at the expense of natural resources.

The Bill seeks to establish standards that would strengthen public confidence in environmental professionals and promote responsible development.
